National Identity Card (NID)
Eligibility
- Bangladesh citizens over 18 years of age (born on 01 January 2008 or earlier) with resident status in Canada (Canadian passport/PR card/ Study Permit/Work Permit), having the required documents to prove his/her Bangladeshi origin. Persons with special needs may need to produce a certificate of mental fitness from a qualified medical professional.
- The applicant must have a 17-digit Bangladesh Birth Registration Certificate and a valid Bangladesh passport. (Name and date of birth on the passport and birth certificate must be the same.)
- Those who have already applied for an NID in Bangladesh are not eligible to apply. NID services are available only for a new NID. Correction service of existing NIDs is currently not available at the Consulate.
How to Apply

- Applicants have to create a profile with an email ID, username, and password. For future usage, please store your password and username. With your username and password, you can log in to the concerned portal/NID Wallet App anytime to download the NID card when ready.
Appointment is Mandatory
- After completing online and submitting Form 2 (KA), applicants must make an appointment with the Consulate through the following email <consular.toronto@mofa.gov.bd> with a subject line “Seeking an Appointment for NID”.
- Please note that Physical Appearance is mandatory for NID enrolment; therefore, applicants must visit the Consulate physically on the appointment day.
Required documents for completing the online application
- Printed copy of the online filled-out application [form 2 (KA)]
- Printed copy of the filled-out Special information form if the applicants’ permanent address falls within the districts of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Khagrachari, Rangamati, or Bandarban; Click here for the form
- Valid Bangladeshi passport (original + clearly readable/color photocopy)
- 17-digit Bangladeshi Birth Certificate (clearly readable/color photocopy)
- A recent passport-size color photo with a white background
Fee
Currently, there is no fee for the NID service
Processing time
- The processing time for the NID card may vary (minimum two to three months or longer) due to the thorough verification procedures implemented by the relevant NID authorities in Bangladesh.
- There is no emergency service for NID; the verification and approval processes are not in the hands of the Consulate, and therefore, the Consulate cannot expedite the NID issuance.
Delivery
The Consulate will notify applicants through email when the original/hard smart NID card is ready for collection from the Consulate. Applicants must collect the card physically with the original delivery slip.
An applicant’s authorized representative may also collect the card. The authorized person must bring an authorization letter from the applicant, a valid photo ID, and the delivery slip.
Applicants may download a digital copy of their NIDs when ready. They can log in to the NID portal through the following link, using the username and password used at the time of application:

Applicants will be directed to download the NID Wallet App to verify their profile details. After verification, they would be allowed to download the digital NID.
Other Important Instructions to note
- The applicant needs both Bangla and English fonts to complete the application form.
- Applicants must provide their blood group in the NID form; therefore, they should know their blood group type before filling in the form.
- All applicants must provide the exact details (Name, phone number, and NID number) of an identifier located in Bangladesh who will be contacted to verify the applicant’s identity.
- On the appointment day, applicants are advised to wear non-white attire as the NID biometrics device sometimes fails to capture a photo with white clothes.
- After application submission to the Consulate, the concerned Upazila Election Office of the applicants’ permanent address in Bangladesh will thoroughly verify the information provided. For verification purposes, the Upazila Election Officer may ask for the any of the following documents from the applicant:
- Academic certificate (SSC/Equivalent Certificate/JSC/PSC)
- Parents' NID (Death certificate if dead)
- Bangladeshi driving license, TIN (if applicable)
- Marriage certificate and Spouse's NID (if applicable)
- Nationality certificate (from Bangladeshi Councillor/Chairman/Mayor/CEO)
- A copy of a Bangladeshi Utility Bill
